Adults who start at sixty are not starting from behind. They know what they want to sound like, they practice because they chose to be there, and they tend to reach the point of playing something they actually enjoy faster than a child does.
Lessons are one to one at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, on an acoustic instrument. Bring whatever you want to be able to play — hymns, favorite standards, something from a movie — and we will build the technique around it rather than the other way round.

Before he ever taught a piano lesson at Musicality, James spent more than forty years in education — including years as a school principal and classroom teacher at schools across the Phoenix area, among them Pilgrim Lutheran School. Piano was always part of the job: he taught it privately alongside his classroom work, later moved into teaching at a private music academy, directed choirs ranging from preschoolers to adults, and accompanied services and school programs on piano and organ. Along the way he’s performed in hundreds of concerts, recitals and worship services.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education, with a minor in Music, from Martin Luther College. Students describe him the same way over and over: compassionate, patient and endlessly positive — exactly the temperament that makes a first lesson feel easy rather than intimidating.
